UNEDITIONS is a new digital publishing platform from Unlimited Theatre, Storythings and the University of Dundee. It's the online home for a brand new form of digital playscript based on the live theatre experience.
UNEDITIONS is the result of a Digital R&D Fund for the Arts supported project, which explored how emerging behaviours around mobile technologies can help the performing arts to create new forms of immersive digital storytelling.
We were interested to find out how popular mobile reading devices – such as an iPad, Kindle or Samsung Galaxy – could allow audiences and readers to experience elements of the live performance as they read a play, in a way that traditional playscripts can't.
As such, we've developed a beautiful take-home experience – a sort of digital bottle that includes sound, lighting and atmosphere to captures the essence of the live theatre production in a digital reading experience.
This new format was developed through a collaborative co-design process that saw Unlimited, Storythings and the University of Dundee work with a Community Lab in Leeds – 20 participants from West Yorkshire from a range of experiences and backgrounds, who have informed the development of the digital playscript at every step of the design process.

The Future of UNEDITIONS
Our first prototype of this new format is based on Unlimited Theatre’s The Noise. Previewed at the Bush Theatre during the RADAR Festival in November, The Noise has now been launched and you can read it free of charge here.
We'll continue to tweak our prototype of The Noise and release it as an offline app in the future. Sign up for updates when that becomes available.
Over the first half of 2014, we’ll be releasing a number of other playscripts via the UNEDITIONS site by some of the UK's most exciting theatre companies, including Third Angel's Where From Here.
Later in 2014, we’ll be launching a self-publishing platform that will enable writers and artists to self-publish their own digital playscripts. If you can’t wait that long, the code for the format is available here.
And we’ll be launching a book – in digital and coffee-table formats – that documents the process of this project.
If you’re interested in being amongst the first to know about newly published texts, sign up to our mailing list for up-to-date news about the project.
